what the stars taught me about God’s love - SPOTLIGHT

by Kelsea Watkins

Have you ever felt insignificant? Like no one is watching? Like no one takes notice of you or the things you do? It’s not even about wanting to be praised for all you do. It’s just that you would like to be noticed as a human being with real emotions and a story to tell.

Recently, I was standing on the beach with some friends. It was a black, cloudy night. You couldn’t even see the stars. We listened to the waves crash towards us and we stood in awe of how awesome our God is.

“The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" Matthew 8:27

I remember thinking, “I just wish I could see the stars”.

(I love anything that has to do with the sky: sunrises, sunsets, stars, the moon. There’s just something about it that brings peace and connection to the Creator.)

It began to get chilly, so we started to walk in towards the beach house. But a few of us decided to stay back, play some worship music on our phones, and just dwell in the presence of God.

We stood there as the music played and the waves crashed. I felt so small standing next to the vast ocean, but I knew the presence of God was evident around me. I looked up to the sky and I saw the stars. The clouds had cleared out above us and the stars shined down where we stood. It was unreal.

I knew in that moment that God heard me. He heard me then and He can hear me now. He cares about something as small as “God, I would really love to see the stars right now”.

This moment overwhelmed me. I went from feeling small and insignificant to known and cherished.

We are children of the living God. He chose us and He cares for us. He has given each of us great purpose. He longs to live in relationship with us all. He has mapped out our paths and He goes before us in battle.

There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. NOTHING.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

So when you begin to feel insignificant... when you begin to feel left out, shut out, or lonely, remember that God fights for you. God goes before you. God loves you. God created you. God is in relationship with you. God cares for you. And God lives WITHIN you.

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

I challenge you to go out into this world that God spoke into existence and take notice of it.

Spend some time reading your bible or listening to worship music or praying and get ready for God to move upon your heart.

God doesn’t want you to be lonely. He doesn’t want you to feel left out. The enemy is the one that wants to isolate us. But we were created for community and God desires that we find our people and work to build others up.

We are more powerful together, so don’t let the enemy keep you in isolation.

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12

Prayer: I pray that you experience God’s love and His grace. I rebuke the feelings of loneliness and the spirit of isolation. I pray that you would no longer feel you are alone, but recognize that you are a child of God with a purpose to fulfill. You can overcome and you will overcome. In Jesus name, Amen!
